Nellie Sparks

1885-1904

Nellie Sparks

Nellie Sparks was born in 1885. She apparently lived with her father after her parents divorced. Although she was to be a promising young artist none of her works have been located. Some sources report that she was sent away to schools, perhaps William Woods College in MO, to develop her talent. She died in 1904 before her citizenship of the Chickasaw Nation was recognized, as well as, her ownership of valuable lands, which became part of Chickasha and the grounds on which the Oklahoma College for Women (now University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma) was established. Reports state that she died of consumption, an old word for tuberculosis.
